Type Locality and Naming

Along the Kassantau uplift, Karshin Steppe. V.G. Danilov et al., 1966; G.Yu. Alferov, 1969 (58, pp.173-175).

Synonym: Kassantau Suite, Кассантаская св.


Lithology and Thickness

Brownish alluvial-proluvial, rarely lacustrine, aleurolitic clays and siltstone (aleurolites), subordinate sandstones, lenses of coarse-clastic rocks. Thickness 100-600m.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

Unconformably overlies Miocene and Paleogene

Upper contact

Overlain with erosion by the Saitian Fm (Sayat Fm?), or Guzar Fm.

Regional extent

Karshin Steppe. According to B.I. Pinhasov, in the western part of the Karshin Steppe, the Kassantau Fm is facially replaced by the Dengizkul-Neog Fm and is its age equivalent - Lower-Middle Akchagyl.

Contains imprints of mollusks Planorbis sp., Avimactra sp, ostracods - Cyprideis littoralis (Br.), C. torosa (Lones), Darwinula stevensoni (Br. et Robert), Limnocythere alveolata Suzin., L. quadrata Mand., Eucypris concinna Schn.
